Legislative Deadlines
Last week marked the first major deadline of the Legislative session. At the Legislature the ‘first chamber deadlines’ marks the days by which bills must be scheduled for a public hearing and work session in their first chamber (i.e., the House or the Senate), and when they must receive those work sessions and move onto the next step. Exceptions to this deadline are bills that are in Committees on Ways and Means, Rules, or Revenue. Last Friday, March 29 was the date by which bills must be scheduled for a hearing and work session in their first chamber. Tuesday, April 9 is the deadline for bills to receive those hearings and work sessions (and votes) in their first chamber.
If bills are not scheduled for a public hearing and work session by the end of the day today, and they are not in a committee on Revenue or Rules, or a Joint Committee such as Ways and Means (or Student Success, Transportation, etc), they will be considered “dead”.
